Jayne Mansfield decorated her house by writing to 1,500 furniture and building suppliers and asking for free samples, telling the donors they could then brag that their goods were in the mansion. The pitch worked, and she received over $150,000 worth of free merchandise to decorate her house which she called The Pink Palace.

  4. Happy Birthday To You was the first song to be performed in outer space, sung by the Apollo IX astronauts on March 8, 1969. There is no record of whose birthday they were celebrating.

  10. The Idiot Files: Francis Karnes, a 39-year-old man from Sacramento, California, was charged with reckless endangerment after he pulled a gun and shot his lawnmower when it wouldn't start.
  11. The popular forked peace symbol was designed by Gerald Holtom of the UK in 1958, and was adopted by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in Britain before becoming a symbol for peace world-wide. The symbol was a combination of the semaphore signals for N and D, standing for Nuclear Disarmament.
